Training for triathlon

Thinking about doing your first triathlon, or your first Half-Ironman, this summer? One of our goals here at The Musselman is to introduce newcomers to the sport, and help you out a bit deciphering all of the ins and outs. We'd love to see you on the starting line of the Musselman or mini-Mussel this summer, but even more than that we'd love to see you become involved in this wonderful sport.

Musselman has teamed up with Doug Bush of Endurance Factor to be the official endurance sports coaching service of the Musselman. Endurancefactor offers a variety of services that will help every level of endurance sport athlete achieve their goals.

Doug has been actively involved in endurance sports for the last 20 years as a mountain biker, runner, road cyclist, and triathlete while coaching athletes for the last five years. His education, experience, and involvement in endurance sports give him a thorough understanding of how to successfully coach athletes. He identified a need for professional endurance sport coaching and physiological testing service and started the company Endurance Factor.

For the both the Musselman and mini-Mussel Doug has prepared beginner/intermediate training plans that will prepare you for either distance of race. These plans will be available in late December 2008. Doug has also written some training tips for Musselman participants here:

Doug's Bio

Doug holds a Bachelors Degree Exercise Science with a minor in Sports Nutrition. He is a firm believer in the importance of constantly increasing his knowledge via continuing education, and he is completing his Masters Degree in Biomechanics. As part of his undergraduate studies he had the opportunity to work at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. While at the training center he helped with the daily coaching duties of USA Triathlon's resident team. These athletes are the United States Olympic hopefuls funded by USA Triathlon.

In addition to the coaching services he offers, Doug offers physiological testing in various locations throughout upstate New York. Use of a metabolic analyzer allows for testing of VO2 max, lactate threshold, and resting metabolic rate.

Professional credentials include:

  • USA Triathlon Level II certification
  • USA Cycling Expert Level certification
  • Member of Joe Friel's Ultrafit coaching association

Doug's accomplishments as an athlete include: multiple Hawaii Ironman qualifier with a 10:15 Ironman Lake Placid PR, 2:54 marathon PR, several expert class Norba podium finishes, and wins in numerous regional road races.
